As a painter I cherish the ability to look deeply at an object (or landscape/subject) and to observe with intention, focus and curiosity. It is my joy to find and pull out the elements that together create the bigger picture, line by line, mark by mark, colour by colour. It is a beautiful process and often instinctive, certainly challenging and more often than not rewarding, no matter the final result.

I studied this little nest very closely before and while painting it. I admired the engineering and the considered placement of each component. I wondered if it is much the same for the artist who created this nest, carefully curating all the right twigs and grasses and piecing it together twig by twig; a feather here, a leaf there, knowing that last touch when the work is complete.

A nest is certainly a work of art and of course engineering. Beautiful in design and strength. I do not know what species of bird created this little nest, but it will be treasured in my studio.

This painting has been exhibited at the Tower Art Show 2022 at Marist Boys College, Ashgrove.
