I Will Carry You Home

As a painter I cherish the ability to look deeply at an object (or landscape/subject) and to observe with intention, focus and curiosity. It is my joy to find and pull out the elements that together create the bigger picture, line by line, mark by mark, colour by colour. I especially love to paint treasures found on my walks and I never come home empty handed. I am often inspired by the line and form of a stick, the colours and textures of leaves and feathers and the shapes and colours of rocks and shells.

This still life painting shows the treasures I found on a walk through my parents' garden at Bellbird Park, where I grew up. It is surrounded by scrub and eucalyptus trees and always littered with gum leaves and gumnuts. It was the perfect setting to imagine the work of writer and illustrator May Gibbs, which I loved reading as a child (and as a grown up!). I often use the large stick in the painting as a drawing tool, dipping the end of it in black ink. It creates interesting marks.

This painting has been exhibited at the Tower Art Show 2022 at Marist Boys College, Ashgrove.
